Storage & Packing Tips

Packing & Storage Tips

Do

  • Use pallets, 2 x 4s, plywood, or anything that will keep your items off the floor of the unit.
  • Use all of the space in your unit. Make a plan for arranging items before you start moving them in.
  • Leave an aisle in the center of your unit so you have a walkway to the back.
  • Use freestanding shelves to help organize your unit.
  • Label boxes on all six sides and keep a list for easy reference.
  • Fill boxes without making them too heavy to lift. Put heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top.
  • Store frequently used items at the front of the unit.
  • Cover items with moving pads, sheets, or light blankets.
  • Check your unit once a month.
  • Disassemble tables, bed frames, and similar items to save space. Wrap and label all pieces.
  • Put hardware in bags and mark the bags clearly.
  • Use original boxes for electronics and other items when possible.
  • Make sure appliances are clean and dry before storage. Leave doors slightly open to prevent mildew.
  • Store couches on end when possible. Stack chairs seat to seat.
  • Use the inside of appliances and drawers to store smaller items.
  • Store mattresses and box springs on long edges, wrapped and elevated off the floor.
  • Store mirrors and paintings on end, not flat.
  • Pack books flat to protect their spines.
  • Drain and clean equipment before storing it.
  • Use bubble wrap or unprinted paper for breakables. Group similar items and mark boxes clearly.
  • Store clothing and draperies in wardrobe boxes on hangers to retain their shape.
  • Purchase insurance. If your belongings are worth storing, they are worth insuring.
  • Use containers with tight-fitting lids that stack easily.
  • Keep more valuable items toward the rear of the unit.

Do not

  • Do not use plastic to cover your belongings. It retains moisture.
  • Do not store food items.
  • Do not pack boxes so they are too heavy to carry, especially boxes of books.
  • Do not assume homeowners or renters insurance will cover belongings while in storage.
  • Do not give out your password, gate code, or account information to anyone not listed as having access.
  • Do not use printed newspaper for wrapping. The ink may smudge onto your items.
  • Do not forget to clean appliances before storing them.
  • Do not store toxins or flammables such as paint, oil, or gasoline.
